We inspect buildings… and make salsa 🌶️

A little flavor from us this week

We may be experts in inspections, but we also take our food pretty seriously. Between long days and busy schedules, a great recipe can be a small win — and we thought we’d share one of ours with you.

Cecilia’s Homemade Salsa

This salsa is always a crowd pleaser. In fact, in the past, when I asked my brother and sis-in-law if they’d like me to bring salsa for whatever gathering, the response was usually something like, “Is that a real question?” So I stopped asking. Now I know that the answer is always “Yes!” 😊

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans (15 oz) of tomato sauce (ideally Trader Joes fire roasted)
  • 1 good handful of cilantro (remove stems, if you prefer)
  • 1/3 of a jalapeno (or more, if you like it hot)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp garlic or 1 garlic clove
  • 1 tsp onion powder

Instructions:

Put it all in a blender, starting with the tomato sauce. Make sure you put the cilantro in last, so it doesn’t wind around the blades of the blender. Don’t blend it too much. Shoot for seeing 1/8-1/4” flecks of cilantro.

Chill it for at least 30 minutes. When it first gets blended, it’s foamy. It’s better if you let it settle a bit.

TIP: If you use Trader Joes fire-roasted tomatoes, and if you do not like salsa that requires a call to the fire department, you don’t really need to add jalapeno. I don’t add it anymore.

The TJ’s fire-roasted already includes green chili, which carries a little heat. But if you enjoy your mouth being on fire, then feel free to add as much jalapeno as you like.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: My favorite thing about this salsa is that there are so few calories — about 25 calories for 1/2 cup. The tortilla chips are a different story. But I see that as a great excuse to really load up each chip with plenty of salsa 😊

Hope this adds a little spice to your week!

If you try it, we’d love to know what you think!
